I’m the Irish girl who decided to move to Australia for 6 months straight after finishing college … mainly because I thought it was just Ireland, but warmer – I am still here 13 years later!!!
After 12 years in the Australian accounting industry, I’ve mastered the art of getting excited about spreadsheets, coffee, and EOFY deadlines like they’re national sporting events. I speak fluent ATO and know that “just a quick question” is never quick. I’ve survived multiple software updates, reconciled things that should never have been out of balance, and learned that nothing brings people together quite like the promise of a GST refund.
Living in Australia has been an adventure. Back home, if someone says “it’s a bit windy,” you grab a jacket. Here, it means “secure your furniture and possibly your life.” And the wildlife! In Ireland, the most dangerous thing we have is an angry cow. In Australia, everything either bites, stings, or just looks like it might.
The accent has also been a journey. I’ll say something completely normal, like “I’m grand,” and people look at me like I’ve just announced I’m emotionally unstable. And apparently I speak very fast—sorry, that’s just efficiency. And the number 33 IS pronounced “tirty tree”.
But honestly, I love it here. The people are friendly, the coffee is incredible, and the weather alone has improved my mood by at least 70%. So thanks for making this Irish girl feel at home… even if I still bring a jacket everywhere, just in case.
